Helge Kühnel was already inventing furniture before starting to study architecture. Over many years, he was collecting furniture design ideas, which in the first place did not leave the sketchbooks. Only when he moved from Amsterdam to Hamburg he was lucky enough to have two architects at the same time carpenters among his employees. Through this he got the opportunity to develop the furniture designs further into three dimensional objects. The first models and prototypes were created. After five years of development and testing, the first prototypes were exhibited for the first time in a small exhibition. For Helge Kühnel, furniture is both a small piece of architecture and an object of daily use, which must first and foremost be useful and easy to use, but which should also be pleasing to the eye of the user.

Helge Kühnel studied architecture at the Technical University of Braunschweig (D) and at the Escuela Superior de Arquitectura de San Sebastian (E). After working as an architect for several architecture firms in Germany and the Netherlands, he is since then running his own practice Publicplan. In 2003 Helge founded ArchEX – architecture on site an agency organising architectural study trips an guided tours. A year later he co-founded 66 East – Centre for Urban Culture in Amsterdam and organised and curated exhibitions for three years.
